It’s been a funny old week, dominated by the CSR – the comprehensive spending review, commonly known as the cuts. These have been written about, conjectured about and knocked around so much over the past few weeks, that the actual announcements were seemingly not as problematic as might have been. This is not to say that they are not important – they are! But the media interpretation has been extraordinary, even appalling.

Labour is in denial over its dreadful last government, its massive over-spending and its lack of control over the economy. Mind you, I don’t level all the blame at the bankers, either. After all, if the general desire is to lend money, for whatever purpose, then there must be an equivalent desire to borrow it. And where has that push for borrowing come from? I firmly believe it can all be traced back to dear old Mrs Thatcher and the days of Harry Enfield’s character “Loadsamoney”.

Do you remember how proud Labour was back in 1997 when they announced that it would sustain the economic programme introduced by Kenneth Clark? What was that all about? A paucity of ideas or an acknowledgement that Labour had really abandoned its working class roots?

No, it would appear, just like Wayne Rooney, labour no longer has any style, any principle, any backbone. It is only interested in short-term gain, shoring up a creaking system, but ensuring it will milk whatever benefit it can before the whole structure comes tumbling down.

So, the media continues to find the cracks in the veneer of the coalition government, continues to find them difficult to locate and, by consequence, peddles the denials of a clapped-out opposition, while the coalition grinds on, seeking to re-create a foundation which will, hopefully, put the country on firmer footing and enable us to face the future with some degree of enthusiasm.
